Marrying abroad, certificate of no impediment

• You or your partner have Dutch nationality.
• You or your partner are registered in the Dutch Key Register of Persons (BRP) of the municipality of Wageningen.
• If you no longer live in the Netherlands, you can apply for the certificate in the last place of residence you lived before you left.
• If you have never been registered in the Netherlands, apply for the certificate at the Dutch embassy or consulate in the country where you wish to marry.
• If you have been placed under guardianship, you will first need the consent of the curator.
• Foreign documents that have not been compiled in Dutch, French, German or English will first need to be translated into Dutch by a certified translator.
• Documents issued in certain countries must be legalised or bear an apostille (go to www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl(Externe link) ).

When you apply, you and your partner will need a valid passport or identity document. The municipality may sometimes also ask you to provide other documents:

• A recent copy of your birth certificate and that of your partner. This will be required if you or your partner were born abroad and this foreign birth certificate has not yet been registered in the Key Register of Persons. You can request your birth certificate from the country you were born in.
• Statement of place of residence, nationality and civil status. Required if you or your partner live abroad. You can request this statement in your current place of residence.
• A divorce certificate or certificate of dissolution of a registered partnership or a certificate of death. This is required if you were married before or had a registered partnership and this was not yet registered in the BRP. You can apply for the certificate from the municipality where you were married or had a registered partnership. You can apply for a death certificate from the municipality where your partner died.

You need to send the originals of all these documents except for the identity documents.

Send a letter to the Municipality of Wageningen, Post Box 1, 6700 AA Wageningen. Include copies of a valid passport or identity document of both you and your partner. The municipality may sometimes also ask you to provide other documents:

You need to send the originals of all the documents except for the passports and/or identity documents of you and your partner. You will receive confirmation that the documents are in order within 3 days. You can then expect to receive the certificate within 3 days.
