Information about separated waste collection for non-Dutch-speaking Wageningen residents. In Wageningen, various types of household waste are separated as much as possible for collection and processing.
General information
For low-rise buildings (single-family houses, row houses, duplex houses, free-standing houses), every household receives three mini-containers for household waste:
- Green container for food and garden waste (GFT)
- Grey container for non-recyclable waste
- Green container with a blue lid for paper
High-rise buildings have three shared containers on the ground floor of the block of flats or apartment complex. One container is for GFT, one is for non-recyclable waste (restafval) and one is for paper.
Household waste is picked up on Monday mornings after 07:30 hours; the green and grey containers are picked up on alternate weeks. On Monday morning, you can place the green or grey container on the indicated location on the street.
You must place the container for that week at the indicated location before 07:30 hours. The container should be closed and should contain less than 75 kg of waste. No garbage bags, boxes or loose rubbish may be placed outside the containers. You must remove the emptied mini-container at end of the collection day. You are responsible for keeping your containers clean.
Organic waste
Organic waste (GFT) is collected in the green
mini-container or a shared container on the ground floor of
the block of flats. The mini-containers are emptied once every two
weeks on Monday. The shared containers for blocks of flats and
apartment complexes are emptied every week.
Treatment
Organic waste is digested at Twence to generate renewable energy.

Plastic packaging
You can separate plastic packaging,
such as bottles, tubes, plastic bags, containers and butter tubs,
from general waste. Plastic collection containers (grey-orange)
have been placed
throughout the city. You can bring your plastic packaging waste
to these locations and place them in the container.
The plastic that you provide for collection (preferably slightly compacted) can be unwashed and the lid/top can be left on. It is, however, important that the packaging material is empty and that no paper, cardboard or (aluminium) foil is left on or in it. Note: this only concerns plastic packaging waste. Do not mix this with other plastic products as this will impact upon the recycling options for the collected waste.
As a result,
the plastic packaging waste can be recycled after it has been
collected. Recycling plastic waste provides the raw materials for
new plastic packaging. It also provides materials for the
production of other items such as flooring, tennis balls, car
materials, golf balls and fleece clothing: from waste to raw
materials!
Used paper
For low-rise buildings, used paper is collected
in the green container with the blue lid. All residents living in a
block of flats or an apartment complex can place their used paper
in a shared paper container (silver with a blue lid), located on
the ground floor of the block of flats or apartment complex. The
collection of used paper is divided into nine districts with
various
collection dates. For more information on used paper
collection you can phone the ACV on 0900 - 20 20 161.

Glass
For collecting used glass, (underground) glass
containers have been placed at convenient
locations throughout Wageningen. You can bring your empty glass
jars and bottles to these locations and place them in the container
according to colour (green, brown and clear).
These glass containers are only for
single-use jars and bottles which
do not have a deposit. Do not try to place large glass objects or sheets of glass in the containers. Moreover, for reasons of safety, these objects may not be placed next to the container.
You can bring large glass objects and glass sheets to the waste collection station at Nudepark 77.
Bottles with deposit, lids and corks, mirrors, pottery, window glass, light bulbs and crystal should not be placed in this container.
Textiles
(Underground) containers are available
near most supermarkets and at the waste collection station for
the disposal of unwanted textiles (clothing, shoes, sheets,
etc.).
A house-to-house collection also takes place four times a year. Special textile bags are distributed before these collections. On pick-up day you can place the bag next to the waste containers at your apartment complex.
You can also bring your unwanted textiles to Emmaus Regenboog, Heerenstraat 9.
Stichting KICI collects the textiles and the revenues generated are used to support the Red Cross and other charities.
Household chemical waste
Household chemical waste includes
objects and substances that are hazardous for people and the
environment, such as batteries, old lamps, medicines, paint,
solvents and motor oil. You can bring chemical waste to the waste
collection station.
Used batteries can be disposed of in the red battery boxes throughout the city, especially at the Milieubus pickup locations and next to the glass containers. You can also hand in old batteries at some shops.
Chemical waste is also collected with the Milieubus (chemical waste collection bus). The Milieubus is present every Wednesday morning near the market on the Niemeyerstraat ( 09:45 - 12:30 hrs).
More locations of the milieubus click here. The Milieubus also collects small electrical appliances and deep-frying oil.
Electrical equipments
Household appliances and
consumer electronics are large and small electrical equipments,
also battery-powered.
Small household appliances, such as mixers, electric toothbrushes and irons can be taken to the Milieubus, the waste collection station or to the supplier of a new appliance of the same type. The supplier is required to accept the old appliance when you purchase a new one.
Large electrical appliances can be returned to the supplier of a new appliance of the same type, or left at a repair facility if the repair is unsuccessful. You can also bring them to the waste collection station, or have them picked up by the Afvalcombinatie. Call the Afvalcombinatie before 12:00 hours on Wednesday morning for a pickup appointment on 0900-20 20 161 (€ 0,01/minute). Large appliances are picked up on Thursday.
You can also bring electrical equipments in good condition to Emmaus Regenboog, Herenstraat 9, tel. 42 21 40, or ask them for a pickup.
Bulky waste
Bulky waste includes large quantities of waste, furniture, construction waste, metals and consumer goods such as refrigerators and televisions.
You can take bulky waste to the waste collection station at Nudepark 77. You need a waste disposal pass to visit the station. There is no limitation on how many times you can bring bulky waste to the station, but each time you can only bring 1.5 m3 (approximately the contents of a small trailer). You can also dispose of cooking fat,
glass sheets, textiles and household chemical waste.
You can take usable household goods to Emmaus Regenboog, or to the Emmaus container at the waste collection station. The goods will be sorted and, if possible, resold. The revenues from the sale of second-hand goods are spent by Emmaus on charitable projects.
You can also phone to have bulky waste picked up by ACV (0900 - 20 20 161). A maximum of 1 m3 for unsorted waste and 0.5 m3 for metals applies. Above these limits, the costs are € 12 per m3. Large electrical equipment is free of charge.
